# Manufacturing Month 2026: Arizona Is Scaling Faster Than Its Quality Systems

 KZN

October 8, 2026

October is Manufacturing Month, and in Arizona there is a lot to celebrate. The Arizona Commerce Authority closed fiscal 2026 with more than **$109 billion in committed capital investment** and **26,225 projected new jobs**, both single-year records, at an average wage of $81,368. Later this month, on October 29 and 30, Arizona MEP and Grand Canyon University's Lux Precision Manufacturing building will host MFG Month 2026 for hundreds of CTE students, with the theme "Inspire the Next Generation of Arizona Manufacturers."

KZN is an early-stage software startup based in Chandler, building a tool that finds the profit and performance hiding inside manufacturers' quality systems. The team came out of the aerospace and defense supply base here, so the headline numbers are only half the story to us. The other half is what happens on the shop floor when demand from the Department of War and from commercial customers arrives faster than the systems built to control it. This post looks at both.

## The companies: a deeper bench, not just bigger names

The 23 expansions the ACA named for FY26 read like a cross-section of modern manufacturing: TSMC, Amkor, ASML and Applied Materials in semiconductors; Hadrian in automated precision machining for defense; Axon and Garmin in finished electronics; ERMCO in power equipment; and a long tail of chemicals, vacuum systems and industrial software firms setting up in Phoenix, Tucson, Gila Bend, Eloy and Cochise County.

The pattern that matters for the supply base is the middle of that list. For every anchor fab or missile plant, Arizona is adding Tier 2 and Tier 3 shops that machine, coat, assemble and test for them. Albers Aerospace is a good example: a Texas defense contractor that bought Tucson's Parallel Ventures in 2025, then opened a 30,000-square-foot "manufacturing center of excellence" in Tucson in July 2026 for precision machining, sheet metal, welding and complex assemblies serving defense and commercial aerospace customers. Twenty-four jobs and roughly $36 million in economic impact is not a mega-project. It is the kind of growth that fills AS9100 supplier lists.

## The products: chips and munitions, built here at volume

Two product stories define 2026.

**Semiconductors.** In July, TSMC added another $100 billion to its Arizona plans, taking total committed investment to $265 billion across ten fabs, two advanced packaging facilities and an R&D center. Fab 1 has been in volume production on N4 since late 2024 with yields the company says match Taiwan. Fab 2 is built for 3-nanometer and is expected in volume production in 2027. Once the new fabs are complete, about 30 percent of TSMC's 2-nanometer-and-beyond capacity will sit in north Phoenix. That capacity pulls in gas, chemical, tooling and metrology suppliers who all need to meet semiconductor-grade quality requirements.

**Munitions.** On September 29, the Department of War awarded Tucson-based Raytheon a $20.7 billion, five-year contract for AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, with options that could carry production into 2033. The department expects about 3,000 new aerospace manufacturing jobs in Tucson and across the supplier network. Raytheon nearly doubled AMRAAM output from 2024 to 2025 and is targeting 1,900 missiles a year from 2027. This follows a $53 billion Patriot award to Lockheed Martin in June under the same multi-year "Arsenal of Freedom" approach to rebuilding stockpiles.

Longer, larger contracts are good news for Arizona primes. For their suppliers, they mean rate increases that can double or triple a part's volume with no change to the quality system that inspects it.

## The capital: government and commercial demand are arriving together

What makes 2026 different from earlier Arizona booms is that the money is coming from both directions at once. Multi-year defense appropriations are flowing through the primes to Tucson and Phoenix sub-tiers. Commercial capital, from TSMC's own balance sheet to the equipment and materials companies following it, is landing in the same metro and often competing for the same machinists, inspectors and quality engineers.

The ACA's cumulative numbers put it in perspective: since 2011, Arizona has landed 1,428 competitive projects, more than 338,000 projected jobs and more than $304 billion in capital. Roughly a third of that capital total was committed in the last twelve months.

## The gap this creates on the shop floor

Here is the problem KZN is building for. When a Tier 1 or Tier 2 supplier wins a rate increase, the same things tend to happen:

- Nonconformance reports, corrective actions and inspection notes pile up faster than anyone can read them, so the same root cause gets "fixed" three times under three different NCR numbers.
- The QMS is too weak to trust but too expensive to replace mid-ramp, so teams work around it with spreadsheets and tribal knowledge.
- Cost of poor quality is real but invisible. Scrap, rework, MRB hours and late shipments never roll up into one number a plant manager can act on.
- Customer audits and Department of War quality requirements arrive on the new volume, not the old one.

None of this shows up in a press release about $109 billion. All of it determines whether an Arizona shop keeps the contract it just won.

## What KZN is building

KZN is software that reads the quality records a manufacturer already has, connects the patterns across years of NCRs, CARs and audit findings, and turns early warning signs into clear, prioritized actions. It runs on-site as a read-only analysis layer over the existing QMS, so there is no migration project and no customer or technical data leaving the facility. The approach grew out of NLP and Power BI analytics on real NCR data inside an Arizona Tier 1, where the same methods contributed to a reduction in cost of poor quality of more than 50 percent.

KZN is at the early-access stage and is opening a small founding group of Arizona A&D suppliers to pilot the product on their own historical data. Quality and operations leaders who want to be in that first group can [join the waitlist here](https://https.kznusa.com/waitlist).

Happy Manufacturing Month, Arizona. The growth is real. Let's make sure the quality systems keep up with it.
